Grizzly Bear 399 and Cubs in Grand Teton National Park

Grizzly Bear #399 of Grand Teton National Park leads her cubs across the Buffalo Fork of the Snake River.

This is the famous Grizzly Bear #399 of Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.  She’s here with her three cubs that she chased away to get them to go on their own just a month later. The entire Jackson Hole area has become quite fond of this particular grizzly bear for successfully raising all three cubs quite often in plain sight of visitors and locals.

Full Moon Night in Zion National Park

A full moon lights up Zion National Park, Utah.

One of my favorite times to photograph out in nature is during the night.  The natural lighting of the moon creates a completely different mood than if the sun were out at any time of day. On our way back from Yellowstone National Park we camped in Zion National Park before heading back to Phoenix on what happened to be a full moon. I took the opportunity to explore Zion a little and get a few shots of the mountains and area under moonlight. Definitely a beautiful sight to see.

Great Fountain Geyser in Yellowstone National Park

Thermophiles bask in the boiling water coming from Great Fountain Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.

One of the more popular but underrated geysers in Yellowstone in the Great Fountain Geyser for its size and amazing display of color. I was hoping to see it go off, however time restrictions at the time prevented me from being able to wait around to see it, especially since it’s roughly every 9-15 hours. It gets its bold, orange color from thermophiles, otherwise known as bacteria that love extremely hot temperatures.

Marmot Reaching for Berries in Grand Teton National Park

A marmot reaches for berries along the shore of Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

A marmot is an interesting little critter if you’ve never seen one.  Having lived in the southern part of the U.S. my whole life it was a new site to see for me. They look they would be a little too wide and large to run fast, but they’ve got that waddle down to an art and are able to pick up quite a bit of speed when they want it.

Dusk Over Jackson Hole, Wyoming

The twilight night sky come out over the National Elk Refuge and Jackson, Wyoming.

While visiting the Jackson Hole area last September we found some campsites up in the mountains past the Curtis Canyon campground that provided some excellent views of Jackson Hole and the Tetons. Dusk is a personal favorite time of day of mine given the right weather conditions. Plenty of subtle light becomes much more obvious as longer exposure times absorb more color.
